YOUR RIGHT IN VOTERS’ REGISTRATION IN NIGERIA – Pius Danba
The next round of elections is creeping slowly upon us and there is a need to understand that voters registration is the first important activity or event for the 2027 elections.
Section 9 of the Electoral Act gives INEC power to register eligible voters. That’s the CVR. Who are those that are eligible voters? You must be a Nigerian. So our brothers from Niger, Cameron, Chad are not eligible to register.
You must also be 18 years and above. By law, we should not have children in the voters register (Section 12 of the Electoral Act). This is the best time to keep an eye. If you wait until election day to shout child voter, you have slept on your right and short changed Nigeria.
As voter registration is going on, Nigerians, NGOs, political parties, politicians have the right to closely monitor the exercise and raise objections where necessary to clean up the voters register.
You may have lost the 2027 election even before 2026 is over if you are not actively participating in the voters registration exercise.
⚖️ LAW TO REMEMBER:
You can register as a voter in any state in Nigeria even if it is not your state of origin and if more non-indigines or settlers register in your state, they can vote for a non indigenous person as your Governor (Section 12 of Electoral Act).
Remember, ignorance of the law is no excuse.
